The Björkholmen wordmark is made from custom-drawn letterforms with strong, chiseled serifs, condensed to make a rather long name more immediate and impactful.
The new logomark nods to the playful abstract expressionism of 1980s New York and represents a canvas scrawled with the letters B and G. It’s designed for use on book spines, as a favicon and for digital uses where the legibility of the wordmark could be compromised.
Over the years, Björkholmen has carved out a reputation for being one of Scandinavia’s most sophisticated galleries, but its brand identity and online presence didn’t accurately reflect its standing in Stockholm or internationally. Our task was to bring the same elegance and sophistication of the Björkholmen gallery experience to its brand identity and digital and visual assets.
While Björkholmen is just one bricks and mortar gallery in Stockholm, it sells work internationally, produces art books with its artists, and regularly hosts an impressive range of overseas talent. It’s certainly one of the most sophisticated venues for abstract art in Scandinavia. The concept of abstract sophistication underpinned the strategic direction of the brand and the creation of every asset.
The new Björkholmen brand is built around a custom-drawn wordmark; a condensed, chiseled serif that is both bold and elegant. This is paired with a playful monolinear logomark that nods to the abstract works for which the gallery is famed. These two devices sit front and centre of a new digital experience built from the ground up to serve as a simple yet sophisticated platform to show off Björkholmen’s artists and its calendar of exhibitions and events, its asymmetric layout echoing canvases arranged on gallery walls.
